Small is Beautiful is the new exhibition at the Fittleworth Gallery. It is a celebration of the beauty, skill and presence of small pictures. We have asked all our Gallery artists to produce works that creatively use a smaller space but still have the charisma to demand attention. The result is an exciting and broad range of artworks from contemporary to traditional covering landscape, portraits, abstracts, animals, assemblages and digital abstracts.
Jon has a spiritual connection to the work of sculptor Alan Thornhill (1921-2020, who spent his childhood in Fittleworth), both using a process of improvisation and not pre-conceiving the work.My blocks are turned and re-worked until narratives - story imagery - start to arise. Things tend to the figurative. Like Thornhill, my “other work" from life gives rise to portrait sketches in clay. The head is enough.
In more recent years Sarah has used her significant skills as an artist to broaden her subject range into portraits and interesting people. This has culminated in her winning a signficant online competition in the United States with her portrayal of the ‘Camel Driver’. Sarah is an amazingly hard working individual and I’m delighted she is one of the first artists to exhibit at The Fittleworth Gallery. I’m sure our customers will really appreciate her fine work and I hope that Sarah will develop a long association and involvement in the Gallery to our mutual advantage.
Phil’s huge commercial experience in Art and the Artworld bring a real dynamism to his Artwork and also a great asset to me personally as he is involved in the contribution to the development and future success of The Fittleworth Gallery. When he is exhibiting, Phil takes great pleasure in discussing his artwork with customers. This adds a ‘live’ feel and atmosphere to the Gallery and his work..
